The Re 420 is the largest and most recognisable locomotive class in Switzerland, serving passenger and freight trains across the SBB network since the 1960s. Paired with the classic EW I/II coaches, it formed a reliable and familiar sight on regional and long-distance services for decades.

All four Re 420 liveries also come with an ETCS DMI (display only — no ETCS functionality, as no Swiss ETCS routes exist yet). KlB = "Kondukteurloser Betrieb" (conductor-less operation). At the time, running passenger trains without an on-board conductor was still a novelty — converting these coaches marked the gradual introduction of conductor-less operation.
